The deer was caught in my headlights. I was heading up the driveway to go for a glass of wine (ok bottle) at my cousin's when I saw the doe at the edge of the gravel. Usually, they take off and bound into the woods. This time she stayed very still and just kept staring at me. It was then I noticed some movement by her feet. Hidden by the sailfish boat that was in the grass was her fawn. She had hidden it behind the boat and was making sure it was well protected before heading off to find food. I imagined the baby was very young as it didn't seem to be moving around too much.

Later when we came home, they were both gone. That was over a month ago now and I have seen Mom and Baby several times, running across the blueberry fields or just grazing. Several times I have seen a buck with them also.

This is not the only family we are sharing our summer with. We have the family of ducks (all six ducklings still accounted for). Our nesting pair of Eagles and their two raucous juveniles, and a lone porcupine who ambles up the drive. I’ve heard the fisher cats at night but hope not to run into them as they can be nasty. We do have an assortment of other birds and critters that we see but these are the ones we wait for and are the most invested in.

And of course, our loons. We have loons that have been on the lake for years. We hope every year to get a chick. This year we think we have two.

So while you all play pickleball, cornhole, horseshoes and swim, we will be in the boat monitoring the lake for invasive species, trying to keep the Eagles from grabbing the ducks and loon chicks and having a Trashcan Turkey and craft beer cookout. Enjoy the Potluck Supper and don’t forget to get your tickets for Reggae!!
