A call you weren’t expecting
Share
You get a phone call out of the blue.
The voice on the line says something serious: “Your name is linked to crimes like moneylaundering or drug trafficking, and you’re in big trouble.” Consumer Advice
Then they say they have someone — an “agent” — who will help you fix things. Consumer Advice
The weird part: “Stay off the internet. Don’t tell anyone.”
The so-called “agent” tells you not to talk to family or friends.
They also tell you not to go online or do a search. They say you have to trust them alone. Consumer Advice
That’s a big red flag. Why? Because if they were really helping, there’s no reason you couldn’t ask someone you trust or check things yourself.
What the scammer is doing
Here’s the trick they’re using:
- They make up a scary story about you being in trouble so you get panicked and make a quick move.
- They pressure you: “Act now or you’ll go to jail, or lose everything.”
- They isolate you: “Don’t tell anyone. Don’t go online to check.”
- They’ll ask you to send money or give banking, personal info — or move your money somewhere “safe.”
What you can do instead
Here are practical steps:
- Stop. If a call shocks you and demands immediate action, take a deep breath.
- Talk to someone you trust. A close friend, family member, or neighbor. Share the story. Saying it aloud helps.
- Don’t send money or give personal info on demand. Even if they say it’s to “protect” you.
- Go on the internet (or ask someone to) and look it up. Real government agencies or real banks will not tell you to stay off the internet or forbid you from verifying things.
- Report it. If you believe you were targeted, you can report it to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Why this matters
Scammers use fear and isolation to make people act without thinking. If you feel pressured, cut off from help or told to stop looking, it’s very likely a scam. Consumer Advice
By knowing these signs, you protect yourself — and you also help others if you tell them what you learned.
